Things to Do in San Diego at Night

Did you know that the city of San Diego is older than the United States? It was founded in 1769, six years before the Revolutionary War began.

San Diego at Night

Today, San Diego is a thriving city with a population of over 1 million people. For many group travelers in San Diego, it’s an attractive destination filled with surf, sand, and sun-and that’s just the daytime attractions.

If you’re wondering what to do in San Diego at night, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll list some of San Diego’s many after-dark activities here.

Balboa Park

Balboa Park is among San Diego’s biggest attractions in every sense of the word, and one of our favorite places to visit in San Diego at night. This park stretches 1200 acres, which is about 2 square miles. Within those few miles are luscious greenery, live theaters, and several museums.

Balboa Park is open to visitors after nightfall, and many lights are on. Many of the attractions offer special deals and attractions at night.

Haunted House Tours

San Diego is a massive city with a long history, so of course it has ghosts. It’s actually home to the Whaley House, which is believed to be the most haunted house in America. Supposedly built on the site of a public hanging, this house was constructed in 1856 and opened as a museum in the 1960s.

Haunted House Tours in San Diego

The Whaley House is just one spooky attraction in San Diego at night. There’s a whole tour’s worth of haunted attractions. The Ghosts and Gravestones tour covers Old Town San Diego, winds through an old Spanish cemetery that houses almost 500 known graves and many others that have been lost to history and ends at the Whaley House.

Explore Old Town

Old Town San Diego has a lot more to offer than ghost tours. It’s a vibrant neighborhood in its own right, with plenty of culture and entertainment to engage with.

Old Town San Diego was founded as a Spanish mission during their colonization of the Americas. Unsurprisingly, Old Town San Diego is home to a host of Mexican-inspired architecture, food, and craftsmanship.

Try some fish tacos, or carne asada while you’re there. There’s also a Mexican twist on a Peruvian dish known as Ceviche, and sushi the size of a burrito.

If you’re looking for a great place to eat or some live music, Old Town is the place for you. Don’t worry about getting lost, either, because Old Town isn’t very big. It’s a fraction of a square mile overall.

Taste Little Italy

Old Town isn’t the only neighborhood that offers outstanding food. Little Italy has some of the best restaurants in the city. As the name implies, Italy has a large Italian population and specializes in traditional Italian food.

Not everything is Italian, either. You’ll find plenty of modern fusion restaurants and local specialties. No trip to California is complete without a taste of California-style pizza. California pizza can be described as a Franken-pizza, a pizza that starts with a traditional crust, and then tops it off with any combination of fresh, local ingredients.

As amazing as the food in Little Italy is, the wine is just as incredible. Italy is the largest wine producer in the world, and the US is the 4th. The United States’ wine production is based almost entirely in California, which produces 81% of the country’s wine. This means that Little Italy is the ideal neighborhood for a wine connoisseur.

San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo isn’t usually open at night, but there is a period between late May to early September when the zoo is open until 9 for evening events.

Most of these events feature live music or even dance performances. Elaborate puppets and acrobats also take center stage in many of these events.

A Seal at the San Diego Zoo

If you wish to see the zoo in San Diego at night, it’s best done early. The events hosted there often begin at four and run until 9. The events also vary in length and by the target audience. Some of them are specifically geared towards children, so they’re great if you’re looking for family-friendly activities.

Explore the Gaslamp Quarter

The heart of San Diego at night is the nightlife in the Gaslamp Quarter. Teeming with Victorian buildings and modern entertainment, the Gaslamp Quarter is a seamless blend of old and new, where neon and kerosene shine side by side.

The Gaslamp Quarter is a major area for nightclubs and live performances. You’ll also find quite a few restaurants to dine at.

Live Theater

If clubbing and dining isn’t your thing, there’s still a lot to do. Many spots in San Diego boast live theater after dark, including the La Jolla Playhouse, located on the University of California campus in San Diego.

There’s also the Old Globe Theater in Balboa Park, which hosts a Shakespeare festival every summer. Those are just a few of the venues that host live entertainment, and they’re not limited to theater. Many San Diego stages also host operas, musicians, and comedians. Some of the most world-renowned acts have performed at theaters in San Diego at night.

Scuba Diving

Diving and seeing wildlife might not sound like nighttime activities, but at La Jolla Cove you can do just that. This cove offers diving experiences for all experience levels, including guided dives.

The most amazing part of diving after dark is the wildlife that comes out at night. The coast of San Diego is home to plenty of nocturnal sea creatures, some of which are bioluminescent. One species of plankton is famous for lighting up the water with a strange glow.
