The sunny city of San Diego is known for its amazing beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, it does a good job of transforming into a spooky town in the Halloween month of October. So, if you are in San Diego, there is no limit to the amount of ghostly but fun time you will have.

If you are looking for where to do just that, we’ve got you covered. Outlined below are the five places to enjoy Halloween in San Diego.

The Haunted Hotel

This is one of the best spots to enjoy Halloween in San Diego. It is the longest running haunt in San Diego, and recently ranked #1 in the nation. That’s right, it never gets boring. There is always an element of surprise even for regulars.

The horror starts with a trip on the Hellevator, into a dark alley of zombies and clown subway ride. Every Wednesdays, there is a total blackout in the hotel with only a glow stick guiding you down the path to horror. The Haunted Hotel is open on selected nights through October 31.

HauntFest on Main

If you are too scared to handle confined spaces, try out the HauntFest on Main. The streets of El Cajon are invaded by the undead for a day. The haunted festival will be brought alive with two live music stages, costume contests, face painting, car show, carnival rides, and lots more.

The kids are also entertained with bouncy inflatables, Monster’s Inc. and Monster’s University movies outdoors and candy challenge activities. Live performance by TNT Dancers, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center, and Arts in Motion Crew & Jr. Crew.

When: October 29th, 5-10 pm

The Scream Zone

The Scream Zone is an indoor haunted house that lives up its name with 5 terrifying haunts. The scream zone features three terrifying haunts that put terror in the mind of even the bravest that dares to enter.

The gates of the House of Horror, KarnEvil and the Haunted Hayride will open if you dare. The compound is a nice spot for scaredy-cats who can’t enter the scream zone. It has a Spirit Lounge bar, photo hotspots, and amazing food vendors.

They are open on Fridays and Saturdays from 7 pm – 12 am, Sundays through Mondays 7 pm – 11 pm.

The Haunted Trail and Experiment Maze

The HAUNTED Trail is a very popular spot to enjoy Halloween in San Diego and the only all outdoor haunted attraction. This walk-through terror lies in the world-famous Balboa Park. With a natural setting twisted mystical trees, the haunted trail can’t be any creepier and fun. The 1-mile long trail gives a horrifying view of gothic haunted houses and a mysterious school bus.

Follow the Red Balloon that leads into the hands of Penny-wise the Blood Drooling clown. There are lots of live actors who make the trail really fun. Tickets for the trail cost $25 each.

Savage House

This is a very unique haunted house located in the heart of San Diego. Unlike other haunted houses, it immerses you in a terrifying storyline fit for horror movies, from start to finish. The organizers are horror movie producers and change the theme every year with amazing storylines.

This year’s theme is titled “Backwoods”. It features a cannibalistic family in a farmhouse setting who do not welcome visitors. A ticket makes you their visitor.
